Madonna of the Goldfinch in Florence
“amore, l'arte e la grazia. La Madonna del Cardellino restaurata“ (“Love, art
and grace. The Madonna of the Goldfinch restored”) is the title of the exhibition that restores Raphael’s greatest work to Florence,
returned to its ancient splendor after ten long years of restoration work.
The exhibition will run from the 23rd November 2008 until the 1st March 2009
at the Palazzo Medici-Riccardi of Florence, the artwork will then be returned
to the same place that it has occupied since 1704 in the Uffizi Gallery.
The Madonna of the Goldfinch was in critical condition in 1998 when the Uffizi Gallery commissioned its restoration.
The canvas had already been seriously damaged only forty years after its completion:
smashed into seventeen pieces after a landslide, it was stuck back together straight
after the disaster and again in later years. However throughout the years these
‘restorations’ have jeopardised the existence of the painting, but due to the
careful work undertaken in the last ten years, this work of art has been saved
and returning the brilliance of Raphael’s original choice of colours.
