Galileo Firenze
"Galileo. Immagini dell'universo dall'antichità al telescopio" (Galileo. Images of the Universe from Antiquity to the telescope) is the title of the exhibition curated by Paolo Galluzzi that traces the story
of the famous scientist and his intellectual and human contribution. Florence pays homage to one of the most representative historical character of the city,
Galileo Galilei, celebrating 400 years from his first astronomical discoveries.
The exhibition will run from the 13th of March until the 30th of August 2009,
at the Palazzo Strozzi of Florence, and it will guide visitors in a journey through
astronomy history, from the ancient Egyptians to Galileo and Keplero's discoveries.
"The exhibition proposes a journey through time and space that begins with the
mystical and poetic visions of ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. It then moves on
to the Greek cosmogonies, characterised by the ingenious homocentric spheres of
Eudoxus, through the planetary architectures of Ptolemy and Arab astronomy, revoking
the Christian interpretations and finally arriving at the heliocentric theories
of Copernicus that inspired Galileo and Kepler, the scholars who – together with
Newton – made a decisive contribution to the definitive consolidation of the new
concept of the universe" describes the curators of the exihibition on the official website.
